Lisbon: Hiking in Sintra attractions

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Destination #1 : Palacio da Regaleira

Quinta da Regaleira is a quinta located near the historic centre of Sintra, Portugal. It is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO within the “Cultural Landscape of Sintra”. Along with the other palaces in the area such as the Quinta do Relógio, Pena, Monserrate and Seteais palaces, it is considered one of the principal tourist attractions of Sintra.

The place is pretty crowded when you visit it on the weekend and it might be around 7 Euros for entry. but it’s worth visiting. Don’t skip it unless it’s pretty busy because you still have lots of other beautiful places to visit.

Map Location:

This trip to Sintra was part of a CS hiking event that we organized to visit the beautiful places there. I am posting our hiking route which includes all the destinations that we have been to that day. You can skip or change it as much as you want but they are all worthy visiting especially if you like hiking.

Destination #2 : Castelo dos Mouros

Built in the 8th century by the early Muslims or Arabs who were called at that time the Moors which is probably due to the link of the region where they came from? Not certain about the name and its relation. The Castle of the Moors is a hilltop medieval castle located in the central Portuguese civil parish of Santa Maria e São Miguel, in the municipality of Sintra, about 25 km northwest of Lisbon can easily be reached by a train which is available almost every 40 mins.

Destination #3 : National Palace of Pena

The Pena Palace is a Romanticist castle in São Pedro de Penaferrim, in the municipality of Sintra, on the Portuguese Riviera. The castle stands on the top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area.

It’s extremely close to the Moors Castle but the entrance is from a different path and it costs about 15 Euros. When we arrived to this place it was extremely crowded and the waiting line was with at least 200 people waiting. We are not sure if it’s worth it from Inside or not but the park was ok to go around.
